Retreat of Winter
Freeze-burn their soft bare fingers.
Trip the fuses in the outdoor lights.
Flood the driveway but let the ice linger.
Send them sprawling; send them back inside.
Make it hard for them to feel their noses.
Let them see their hallowed spring is cold.
Leave but let them know its you who left them.
Not that you were driven back if truth be told.
Chap their lips but let them think the garden,
Shows some signs of coming back to life.
When the seeds are in the ground then make it harden.
Cut the strands of summer dreams with winter’s knife.
